AWD Tire Replacement
Hey guys, I tried doing a search on this question and I didn't find a ton of info. Also what little I found out regarding this question, the dealer told me wasn't true so I wanted a second opinion so here it goes...
I was looking into getting a Lexus IS 350 AWD. First off, I heard that the tires have to be the same diameter or else this will cause damage to the transmission (the differential in particular).
-So if you get a flat you have to make sure whatever tire you get is the same diameter as car's other tires. The dealer told me that this wasn't true and is only true for Audi's etc. This seems like BS to me, but I wanted a second opinion.
If it is true that the tires have to be the same diameter, then:
-What is the max difference in tire diameter permissible. Also, can this just be checked by measuring tire tread depth assuming the tires are the same brand etc. If not, then what are you using the measure the tire diameters? It seems like you'd need some pretty big calipers.
-Do you have to just make sure the rear tires are the same diameter as each other and the front tires are the same diameter as each other? Or do all the tires have to match in size.
Thanks for the help!

Ideally in general you want to have the same tires all around. The dealership would not be responsible if the car gets problems in an event that the person uses different size tires between front and back and the car ends up having a problem. Probably checking tire tread, brand or possiblty using a caliper would probably be going to the extreme. It's safe to assume same tires, and if the car is properly aligned rotated properly, the wear and all 4 tires would be identical.
There are plenty of people here on the IS 250/350AWD that are running in staggered for instance and do not have problems running their car in this manner. I forgot the exact details but as long as the difference is within a few percent, it would be ok. Members who are familar with this can fill in the missing details.
