Default IS250 tire question...

New guy...
Just bought a 08 with 29k. after getting rid of my 325i..
Question is i need new tires for the front... the back are still ok... is there a problem if i buy Eagle GTs for the front and keep the stock tires on the back? just worried about handling.
Sock tires are just to expensive compared to other brands.

Why not see if there are any used tire lots that may have the matching tires. That way, you can run the set for another 10-15k miles and then change out the set.

Me, I would shop hard and find a complete set. Sometimes, buying 2 vs 4 is not that much difference in price.

The stock tire brand sucks though.

If you were to replace all 4 you can get much better tires, for a lot less money. (The Hankook V12s for example).

BTW, the reason your fronts died so early while the rears are ok is almost certainly the poor toe setting that comes from the factory- so get an alignment while you're at it (from a shop that actually understands alignment, not the $50 firestone special)

toe setting? nearly 30k on a set of fronts is good...is it not? i think the rears have been changed a while back

I was planing on changing over to Goodyear GT.... they are nearly the same price as the Hankook v12....

I have looked for used stock ones with no luck..

you can have different tires on the front compare to the back. That is no problem.

I agree with kurtz though, if you buy a set of 4, you can usually fine a very nice deal, which would save you money in the long run when you do have to replace your rear tires. And the stock tires do suck indeed, look for other brands, they are cheaper and handle much better. A good choice IMO are the hankooks v12

The OEM tires have directional treads so make sure whatever you buy for the front is compatible with the rear. BTW my front tires wore out at about the same mileage as yours. Rear tires are still good.

i saw a bunch of 225/40/18 used on ebay...go that route, its pretty safe and pretty cheap. Find a tire that has about the same life as your rears left so you dont over pay and then upgrade to BFs of Hankook...two best IMO. BFs handle better (to me) and Hankooks are more quiet. Both destroy stock bridgestone and Dunlop set ups.

Can those with the Hankook V12s confirm whether they stay quiet during cold months? My experience with summer tires is they seem to get hard or noisy in the colder months. Tirerack shows the Goodyear Eagle GT as a decent option for all season. Any others?

Have driven my Hankook V12s in as cold as mid-high 20 degree F weather and not noticed any significant noise difference...

Note you will NOT want to drive them under 35 degrees on anything but dry roads... they're phenomenal wet tires in normal weather- but they are, like all summer tires, completely worthless in even a hint of snow.
