It's not a filter. Only the removable one is the filter.

leave it. you lose power if you take out the metal one.

what a joke....
tell me this was a joke...

anyways, this is what 2 filters should look like.
Unfortunately, the IS does not have it.

What you are seeing is just a second layer of defense in case somebody forgets to put a filter back in or the primary filter has some catastrophic failure.

Umm, NO it's not a joke, it's been proved independently. Removing the charcoal filter (part of the required gear for ULEVII) from the airbox creates unexpected turbulence around the MAF and causes a small, but repeatable, power loss.

And NO, it has nothing to do with secondary air filtration for the engine. It's there to capture hydrocarbons escaping from the intake manifold when the engine is off.

it's there to trap hydrocarbons. it's not for filtering dirt.

caymandiver lost power on an actual dyno. when he took out the charcoal filter.

Unbelievably true. Just to make sure it wasn't a fluke that day I swapped the charcoal filter in and out twice and got the same results of 1hp as lobux said.

Oh and on my last dyno session this past week I was curious and pulled the intake filter completely leaving the charcoal filter in place. Guess what? Yup I consistently lost power again by about 2hp. The stock setup with JoeZ pipe just works best. No need for drop in filters and no needing to pull the emissions charcoal filter from the airbox lid.
