IS350 Automatic Transmission Problem?
I've noticed two issues lately and was wondering if anyone had similar issues and/or some advice. I am planning to take my car in next Friday but any information that I can get now may help me when I talk to the service advisor.
1. Sometimes the car stays in 5th gear when slowing to a stop and finally shifts to 1st at the last minute followed by a clunking noise.
2. When accelerating on the freeway to get up to speed the car stays in 5th gear and seems to stick there, even when I take my foot off the pedal and allow a few seconds for the car to shift to 6th. Today, while driving back from San Diego, it stayed in 5th gear while I was maintaining 75 mph for about 2 miles. I then let off the pedal and slowed to 60 and it still was stuck in 5th. So I shifted the transmission to sequential shift mode then back. As soon as I went to S-mode it downshifted to 4th and then when I went back to normal mode it shifted to 6th. After that it was fine for the rest of the drive.
It appears to be an intermittent problem because the car shifts normally most of the time. Any input would be appreciated...Thanks.

If the trans has not reached operating temp (Or close to it) it will not shift into 6th. If it did reach that temp, this feature probably has something to do with the problem. This is the first time I've seen/heard of this problem.

Thanks, I haven't heard of that feature. The clunking noise when slowing down worries me a little. I don't have very many miles on it either. I bought in in Nov 06 and it only has 9800 miles on it. Yeah, I did a search about this problem and didn't see anything about it. They'll probably say it's just me but I'll take it in anyway just as a precaution.

Since your car is quite low in terms of miles, then you should bring it to your Lexus dealer to have it checked out. It probably is under warranty since your car is pretty new. Perhaps the Lexus tech. can determine what the culprit is.
Hope you have an answer to your question soon

I have an 08 and have the same problem. When I am on the freeway and it down shifts to 5th gear it won't upshift back up for a while even if it's at 3000rpm for a while. I think it's normal though because this whole transmission is a failure by Lexus.

Bump this because I am having the same 5th gear won't upshift to 6th problem on the highway, only does this when the car is still really cold in the mornings though & it would then eventually upshift. I'm hoping this is a feature to warm the car up faster & not a issue/problem

i have an 08 is350, does the same thing, sometimes stays on 5th, and also when coming to a stop feels like it waits last minute to down shift to first gear making the sound he described, I dont think it was such a problem in fact just ignored it thinking that is how it is.

If you use the sport mode the trans will down shift sooner to help shed speed (when braking) and will hold a lower gear longer (when partial at throttle). I never use sport mode anymore (use manual mode when playing), I don't like the jerky shifting and the normal mode gives more revs before shifting at WOT (which I seem to be at most of the time).
