7/1/2010 Engine stalling valve spring replacement recall (merged threads)
#31
I am surprised the 250 is not on the list with all of the reports of rough idle and stalling. I only have 20K miles on my '08 250 and the rough idle has continued after the top engine cleaning as it has with others. I wish I could be more optimistic about Lexus' customer service and commitment to fixing problems. Lexus now claims this idle is within specifications and refuses to do anything else. I had a '97 ES 300 before this for 10 years and it was never in the shop overnight nor did my 3 Toyotas before that. This car has spendt numerous days in the shop at least 3 different visits. I think Lexus/Toyota cut too many costs to climb to #1 and DID sacrifice quality.

This mentions the affected models. The IS350 is one of those affected.

When I got my IS 250 (2008 and manual), something similar happened. I was driving slowly to a red light and suddenly the car starting stalling. Then the engine turned off, and the engine light turned on. I was lucky and was able to steer the car to the side of the street since it was still rolling and turn off the car and turn it back on. It was the only time this happened.
I was pretty surprised since the car was fairly new about a few months. I told the Service Rep this and was told this has never been reported.
Thanks,
Dien

For some reason my 350 sounds loud while idling and at low speeds I only got 7000 miles on it and it doesnt sound like a Lexus with all the rough engine noise . I had a 1999 GS300 w/ 140K when I sold it and you could barely tell the engine was running. I tried listening to other 350s but they too exhibit the noise maybe mine is a tad bit on the louder side.

I'm afraid that it's not only those models, but also the IS250 as clearly documented in these old threads;
OMG... Total BS! (brand new car with check-engine light indicating misfire)
Recommendations on what to do (check engine light and drained battery)?
car shaking while stoped.. help please!!
Check VSC, Check Engine, and Traction Control lights came on among other things.
Has anyone experienced any serious problems with their 2IS? Has anyone experienced any serious problems with their 2IS?
strange reaction? (Idle RPMs drop and car shakes occassionally) strange reaction? (Idle RPMs drop and car shakes occassionally)
To quote Lance:
Seems like this has been happening with the IS250 for some time now... could this have some sort of link with what IS250 owners are experiencing, tied with the carbon build up?

Did you consider it may be the gasoline? Water in the fuel will definitely cause misfires. Misfires can be a LOT of things, but the first thing to check is the fuel unless there is some other code clearly indicating a failed component. Besides, as new as the car is, I'd call it infant mortality if it is a failed component, and they'll get it sorted out in short order.
Not every single car can be perfect. No manufacturer is that good/lucky.
[EDIT] OK, there is a TSB. EG019-06 covers M.I.L. ON" DTC P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, OR P0306

If your VIN is lower than these numbers, your car may be affected. The fix is new lash adjusters, valve springs and valve spring retainers. This does NOT apply to the 2GR-FSE, ONLY the 4GR-FSE in the IS250.
I extend my deepest sympathy if yours is an affected unit. This is a full day's work according to the TSB. You may be without your car for awhile.

Sounds to me like their spring winding tools have been on autopilot and their output has not been sufficiently QA'd. Breaking an OEM valve spring on an unmodified engine is an "almost never happens" because they spend so much time and money on development. The last thing in the world any OEM wants is broken valve springs. It can destroy the whole engine very quickly if the valve drops.
This is very bad news for Toyota.
