Yes if it's stock for stock the 350 beats the 335i on the drag strip. matter fact heres me doing it.

also at the track it's the driver not the car.

At the track it's the driver
My car is not as fast as the rs4, nor as nimble as the lotus, but yet i manage to be passing them. I was not even driving that good at this point because I was tired. You can hear the tranny jumping down when I am trying to accelerate out of the turns. It's hard to be smooth in the IS at the track, but it's quiet capable

Quote: I thought the is350 was faster than a 335i in a drag but not on the track? Am I wrong?
You're right given equal drivers. I dont think there is much difference at all in drag assuming equal drivers and conditions. Around the track is another story though that's where you'll see the real difference in the cars as well as the driver's. While the 335 SHOULD be faster around a track if your grandma is driving it chances are it won't be. Any car is only as good as its' driver as mentioned above.

I've seen where everyone says just leave it in D and go, that it shifts faster if left alone, but what about being able to hold a gear using the paddles?

IOW, you downshift into your desired gear before the turn so its not having to downshift on exit? Will these cars at least hold a gear like that?

Racing around a track is going to be about 80% driver skill and 20% car...

I just got back from an AMG racing event at Roebling Road racetrack in Savannah, GA. My father has a CLK55 that has been slightly modified (ECU tuning, intake, exhaust, wheels and tires, nothing crazy), and for 5 laps a 2009 911 GT3 could not get away from me...the owner even talked to me after and said he had his foot to the floor, but I could tell he didn't take the best line...anyone knows a GT3 would smoke a CLK55, but not this time...

I have yet to track my IS350, I autocross my Saturn for now...but I am getting the urge to put the 350 on a track to see what it can do...I have a buddy of mine who races time trials with his subie and viper, and he keeps pushing to mod the 350 and join...

I think the difference between the Stock IS350 and a (Swaybar, PS2 or similar tires, Coliovers, better brakes) IS350 is night and day. To me the IS350 stock is a boring car.
I found that the stock IS350 had stupid understeer, the ride height was so high that made braking uncomfortable, the chasis is too soft on hard turns, and overall just felt like a bigger car than what it is.
With the right mods and tires, its a whole nother story.

But, like most said, the Driver definitely has more to do with it. Ive passed E46 M3s in less than a lap, and im not even that good, they just werent good drivers.

Answered my own question today.

I drove a GS350 and an IS350 at the dealer. The GS would upshift if it thought you forgot, the IS would hit rev limit. All I needed to know if I plan to track the car from time to time and tells me that even if the IS is faster if left in D instead of using the paddles, or the stick, on a dragstrip, it doesn't mean thats the way around an autoX or road course. Obviously the way to run either, other than in a straight line, is with your own trans control so you don't have to deal with the downshifting on corner exit like the driver is doing in the videos above.

What stinks though is how much a lease is on an IS350 vs a G37. I'm a big Lexus fan, but the purpose of long term durability vanishes when you start talking lease and right now, all things considered, down paypment, monthly payments, etc. Here's how it shakes down:
IS350: 36mos/36k mi, $728/mo
G37: 39mos/39k, $475/mo

Both cars would residual at about 50% of their sticker price.

The transmission in the IS350 is actually very quick. In PWR mode, the actual shifts have been quoted by lexus to be able to shift in .001 of a second, which is faster than some ferraris.
