wats the difference between sports shift and automatic shift?

wats the difference between sports shift and automatic shift?
i got a couple of newb questions about how the transmission works:
1. i can downshift in auto drive mode so whats the point of the sports shift? they seem to be working the same way?
2. why does the drive go up to 6 gear even when i'm going at like less than 40 mph and at 2000 rpm, is it to save gas?
3. what if lets say i'm going 35 mph and i leave it at 2rd gear, is it bad for my engine if i keep speeding up to 65 mph?
4. can i go down to first gear cruising at like 45 mph?
5. i'm only at 400 miles, is it bad if i use the downshift/rev over 4000 rpm?
6. i'm so scared to drive my car, am i just being a lil ***** about a new car?
this is my first new car purchase and i dont wanan **** anything up so please help a newb out

The S-mode and accompanying paddle shifters are not really "shifters" in that they don't actually shift gears, nor were they designed to - they're merely a mechanism for manually selecting the gear range. Following is Lexus' description of the paddle shifters, taken from the New Car Features section of the FSM:
Here are the rules by which the different 2IS transmissions allow downshifting:
As you can see, 4th gear allows a top speed of 109, 113, and 109 mph, respectively. You have to be going insanely fast for 4th gear not to be appropriate for the speed at which you're driving.

Why on earth would you want to go down to first gear at 45mph? All you are doing is wasting gas, wearing out your components, and calling attention to cops around you. Drive appropriate for the streets you share with everyone else and take care of your investment. 
Also be aware that unlike say the M mode on the IS-F you are -never- directly shifting your car.
All you have is a top gear limiter.
The car will continue to shift on its own, fully automatically, within the range of gears you are allowing it to use.
The only time you'll ever have the car -seem- to be up-shifting at your command is when you've locked out a specific gear it thinks it should be using and you're now adding that back to the allowed range.
The only time you'll ever have the car -seem- to be down-shifting at your command is when you're in the correct gear (as far as the computer is concerned) and then lock that gear out of the allowed range (forcing it to automatically shift to the highest allowed gear instead)
