I think its time to say "Hello" to Dr Diesel.

Most cars in Europe are diesel and have decent performance and don't stink and smoke like they used to. Still have a bit to go to meet US emissions standards..which is tough now..worse later.

I also suspect car mfg's will build the cars to get better mpg and better emissions via computer controls/technology. My guess is that these controls will be able to be reprogrammed to get the power back. These re-programers are already out there, but I think it will be a much bigger market in the future.

The car mfgs can say they did their jobs and it isn't their fault that consumers modify what they did..But hey I am a conspiricay kinda guy

Lets hope that if plug in electric is the future, we can support it with clean energy. With today's technology, most people would charge their cars at home at night..when most electricity is generated via coal plants...which doesn't really solve the emission thing

^You are assuming that the goal is really to reduce emissions.

Carbon trading will be big business if they have their way. I think they are trying to create a new market of smoke and mirrors (pun intended). IMO, if you really want to get down to the truth, all you have to do is ask yourself who stands to make money.

Aren't you describing FTHS?

If they do make it, this is a very nice commute car. And if they do make it, I bet it will be branded as lexus, not toyota.

meh, most cars will apply with the standards, but there will be cars in different categories that will get around this. its called a luxury tax...

anyways jsut to get the 34mpg standard we will be paying 10k premium on each car just for better mpg. just like all the studies on current hybrids now. is it worth the price difference? most studies show that it takes 5+ years to make up the difference in gas cost and they dont factor in rising prices for gasoline.

fact.

Bear in mind the number is a -fleet- average.

They can still sell cars that get worse mileage, so long as they sell at least as many that get better.

With good reason. Between tougher pollution standards, the 55MPG national speed limit and phased-in CAFE requirements, the late 1970s and early 1980s were not a good time to buy a performance car. To whit, the 1982 Corvette: 200 horsepower, 0-60 in 8 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 16 seconds at 85 MPH. They were even worse for small family cars, e.g., the 1980 Corolla: 60 horsepower, 0-60 in 16 seconds.
