$400 is too low. Go to a few reputable body shops & get estimates. If the repair estimate is 800-900, and your deductable is 500 or 1K, there is no need to contact your insurance company because you will be out that much anyway. Just pay for the difference out of pocket....but I would get it fixed before it starts rusting.

People may not know how to drive, but more of them do and just don't care. I've seen pickups push cars out of the way in front and behind with their bumpers to squeeze into a parallel parking space.
Part of becoming an experienced driver is recognizing the jungle we subject ourselves too, and avoid bad situations. You can't change the way somebody else drives.

i was angry to hear that someone hit your car, but i was just as angry to hear that you "settled" for $400 to dodge the insurance...i hope you let your mom read these posts so that she realizes that she def. got the short end of the stick.
might as well go take that $400 and blow it at a strip club because it aint gunna fix your car, especially a Lexus nonetheless

When I got my car keyed, the workshop quoted me at $250 to repaint the whole rear panel of my car. I was skeptical at first and I decided why not and went with it. To my surprise, they did a good job and matched the trunk and bumper and door. So it can be had for $250. But that's just the risk you take with a small shop. I did ask about the paint matching and they said they have a machine that mixes the paint based on the color code.

If your mother did the negotiation and "forced" settlement at $400, then I can reasonably infer the following:
1. She paid for the car, or paid a large part of the cost; and/or
2. She pays for your insurance, or a large part of that cost.
If both 1 and 2 are true, then it's really your mom's decision. If only 1 or 2 is true, then she at least had standing to be involved in the discussion, but you should have stuck to your guns to reach a compromise. If neither 1 nor 2 are true, then you just got owned by your mom.

thanks for all the input guys. I realized AFTER it was all said and done that i prolli needed more. Im just hoping that 400 will cover the cost. Is there a cheaper alternative that is inbetween touch up paint and repainting the entire panel or is there just no possible way. Also if i choose not to fix it, is there anyway i just can just protect it from rust damage? And my parents do pay for my insurance so yeh she had some say in the issue. Regardless, whats done is done now so no point at looking at the what ifs, just gonna make me feel worse. Right now all i can hope for is that it can be fixed for 400.

Is the car insured with your mom as the driver? If so, that would be the reason she said to take the $400 because she doesn't want any problems with the insurance and the fact that your driving the car and not her(probably because it is a lot cheaper to insure it with her as the primary driver than it is with you). The reason I know this is because I'm 32 and married and I pay about 1k every 6 months so if you are younger and not married I'm positive that the insurance would be damn high compared to mine. Either way it's your moms call. BTW just shop around and see if anyone will fix it for the $400 you have and maybe you'll get lucky.

400 is too low...that should be 2 pieces work, and i think it's going to cost like 600-700.
i think you should call the person who hits you and ask for more money...if not..go to insurance, the insurance will help you get the money thur the person's insurance...and your rate won't go up because it's not your faults
