Default How Many Gears

Hey Guys, how many gears are there in the Auto Transmission?

I noticed that the car shifts gears some times but the gear number doesnt change, so does that mean there are 'half gears'...I know it sounds stupid, but my curiosity is driving me nuts...lol

OP said display doesn't change so he/she has already turned on the info display.

I've noticed this as well. I think the automatic is a 6 speed with overdrive. When this happens, the car is just dropping out of overdrive.

It's got 6 speeds. There are no hidden or additional gears.

Overdrive is a term that means any gear less than 1:1, it's not a special mode.

The car has 6 forward gears, all of which should display on the correct screen of the multi-display as the car shifts through them. (which is NOT the same thing as the gear # that shows up in S mode)

Then it may be the torq converter unlocking. It most definitely feels and appears to change gears though even though the gear display does not go down a notch, but the RPM's go UP about 500.

The torque converter locks and unlocks in the top gears. So it may seem as though the car actually shifts, because you notice a drop in RPM, but its just the lock-up converter doing its job, eliminating slippage in the transmission to improve gas mileage.

Which gears does it lockup in, just 5 and 6?

Depends. If standard lock is working, 5 & 6 only.
The ECM operates the lock-up timing control in order to improve the fuel consumption performance while in top gear with the shift lever in the S4 or S5 range, and in 5th or 6th gear with the shift lever in the S6 range or D position.
If flex lock is working, 3 - 6.
In the low-to-mid-speed range... ...The flex lock-up clutch control operates in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears in both D position and S6 range, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears in the S5 range and 3rd and 4th gears in the S4 range.

And now for the dumb question: how does one know which of these locking types is happening?

I don't have any problems with my display or shifting, but was fascinated by the explanation from lobuxracer.

Ditto what Fredw1 asked about this.

There appears to be some overlap with 5 & 6 as they are on both lists.
