is250 hp gains
It's really not.
Edmunds test of the S5 found 0-60 of 4.9, same as an IS350 has been reported at from one major car magazine.
Edmunds test of the S5 found 1/4 mile of 13.3, just barely faster than the 350s magazine test #s, and about identical to what a few forum members have run.
Plus the S5 is $20,000 more, has crappy gas-sucking AWD, and offers Audis, err, "reliability" compared to that of lexus.

Surely not for the same options?
That's considerably more than even the MSRP price difference between the cars.
2008 pricing shown:
IS250 RWD base MSRP:$32,025
IS350 RWD base MSRP:$36,305
Difference of: $4,285 based on MSRP, which is way more than anyone should be paying.
Invoice is $28,181 and $31,948 respectively, a difference of $3767, which is about right.
Now, if you don't care about speed at all, by ALL means save the ~$3500 and get the 250. That's exactly the target market for the car.
If you DO care though then the point is, get the 350, since you'll gain over 100 hp for about $3500, which is 4 times the horsepower you'd gain for spending twice that difference in price.

Edmunds found 4.9 and 13.3 for 0-60 and 1/4 mile on the S5, and we've certainly seen IS350s report faster times than both, as well as slower times for both.
Given the IS350 is vastly more reliable, is lighter, with better mileage, and $20,000 cheaper, it seems a pretty obvious choice if you're focusing on any sort of objective analysis.
if you're focusing on "OMG IT LOOKS COOL" then analyzing the numbers probably isn't your thing, and it's your $ so buy as you wish.
