The vinyl wouldn't necessarily be cheap looking if it's done right. But it can be very cheap looking if done wrong. The problem with vinyl is matching it to the color of your car.
Well i suppose you could technically paint carbon fiber but I see no point in paying extra for the carbon fiber IF there's that "handful of companies" that make them like 'chrIS250" mentioned.
So what are these companies?

+1...they do look good if done right...but IMO the obsidon and SGM cars can pull it off better.
