Default NAVTool DIY install with dvd player

The first step is to take apart the dash and glove box. I followed the OEM ipod installation directions 2008 OEM IPOD Instructions (linked from Chuckler's Page)

Everything was pretty straight forward if you follow the directions.

the hardest part i found was the vents. I did everything to make sure I didnt break any clips but ended up breaking one of the 4 click that you push with the screwdriver.

Ended up doing it the hard way. I carefully removed the trim first which is a biaatch.

The trim is held on by the tabs on top and the tab clips on the bottom.

The vent is supposed to come out with the trim in place but I couldn't figure in out. It ended coming out easy when the trim was off though. The hard way.

The panel under the airbag is held by 4 metal clips. Just pull down it should come off. I pulled in the wrong angle and broke one of the metal clips.

Airbag removed.

Glove box out.

Tight fit for the DVD play in the glove box.

Had to drill and cut the plastic piece on the back of the box. Its a removable piece. If there wasn't a metal bar behind the box you could recess the dvd player thru that hole.

Nav unit out...just unplug all the harness' its easier to work behind the radio since the harness' are short.

Be careful with that plug on the side. Its the exact same plug harness as on the radio and I accidently plugged the NAVTool to it and it turned the hazards on. The correct harness for the NAVTool is the middle harness on the radio (lowest set of plugs on the Nav Unit).

plugged into the wrong harness (Don't Do)

The Video harness is that separate cable. If you don't have ML, like most of us, you will only use plug end and the BLUE RCA plug. Just plug the cable into the Blue connector on the back of the Nav Unit (currently not being used) and connect the Blue RCA to the Blue RCA on the NAVTool. The Yellow RCA and socket end are not used unless you have ML. I just wrapped it all up and zip tied it.

Testing

I think the NAVTool actually just unlocks the ML programming already built into the Nav Unit. This screen below looks like a OEM Hint if you have ML.

I ended up mounting the NAVTool Box above that blue box above the glove compartment. I used velco strips on the boxes.

Its a tight fit and you must position in the correct place to get it to fit.

I drilled a hole and used a 1/2" grommet for the second set of RCA for other inputs. (Hold seek for a few seconds to activate the 2nd set or use the trigger wire)

Initial Impressions...NAVTool did the job and works well so far.

Pyle DVD Player is a piece of crap. Only thing good is it fit perfectly in the glove box and looks like it belongs there.

Bad Stuff about the Pyle DVD Player.
1. Turns on everytime you start the car (Only starting the engine, not when you just turn the car on). I tried several things with putting a relay on the ACC and Constant power but still does it. Its probably bad surge suppression on the power supply in the unit that causes it to turn on when the alternator powers up. Ended up putting a switch on the to manually turn the ACC power on to the DVD player.

2. Engine and Alternator Whine. Doesn't come with a ground loop filter so the DVD player picks up all kinds of interference. The interference transfers to the NAVTool unit because I tested it with my IPOD Video input on the second A/V set and turned the DVD player on and the whine was on the IPOD input. IPOD works fine with no whine if I'm not charging it (even when charging, its a small whine)

3. Doesn't remember the last MP3 played (Not important since the IS already has its own MP3 player) It does remember you DVD position though.

4. Sound level is low even when volumn on the dvd player is all the way up.

5. The clarity on the picture output is bad due the engine/alternator interference. Hopefully the ground loop filter and a shorter RCA cable will fix this. (very hard to impossible to find a 1' RCA A/V cable)

The picture and sound is great when I use that $52 Apple A/V cable on my Iphone though. I have this connected to the second set of A/V inputs. It only make a small whine when I am charging the Ipod/Iphone.

Hey Sin... did you do the navhack as well (tim817's DIY) to enable mp3/phone operation while moving while you had the navi apart?

Wondering if NavTool will let you skip the navhack ...
