I think it's a driver's race in a straight line though with an auto you will run pretty consistently, something a manual or even SMG M3 may not do, depending on the driver of course.
Game over, m3's own on the track, with decent small mods.

But, if you have a good driver in an is350, it wont be to far behind.

It's all in the driver.

Lexus had a road course where people were given instruction by pro drivers, got some track time in an IS-F, then the challenge was simple. The pro got an IS 250 manual, you got an IS-F, and all you had to do was keep up with the pro around the track.

I talked to one of the drivers, and he said maybe 1 person out of 15 or 20 was able to do it.

Once you get past 1/4 mile, straight line races, it all depends on how good the driver is.

They assume things WAY TOO EASILY. You gotta actually drive the IS350 to feel the power even from a roll. As stated and experienced by many IS350 owners here have ran against the E46 M3 and they either stay about even or beat the M3.

If you(not you, smokyis350) don't like the way Acura TL AUTOMATIC handles in the high speed rolls then go ditch it and get something else. Get the G35 6MT or TL Type-S 6MT or something... The problem is the TL AUTOMATIC, not the IS350.

Also our member juice14 managed to beat the 400HP Pontiac GTO 6.0 in his IS350 in the drag strip..

.

This guy drives a acura TL and telling us what our cars can't beat? The TL has a bad automatic period. They have transmission problem and it is a FWD. Lexus has one of the best automatic out there. On par with the mercedes and the BMW. But we need more work on the paddle shifter. Like a 5 second delay thats why I don't even use it.

How does the "driver matter" in a straight line race? lol. You push pedal, car goes. Does anyone use paddles in a straight line race?

I have owned 1 to many TL's and the trans was a major problem. however the trans in the IS was slipping when I hit ~ 20k miles so its not perfect either. Thats the same time frame I started to have problems in all my TL's...The build quality of the TL was the same as the IS IMO. Yes I will take RWD over a FWD car all day long but all the same issues I had in my TL's I had in my IS! Same rattles, same subwoofer rattle, everything followed the same pattern.

The driver can matter when you're racing a car that has a manual transmission, i.e. the M3 in this case. Even with SMG the driver has to shift the car and do so at the right time - though Im sure an IS350 would beat an SMG fairly easily since the SMG is slower 0-60 compared to a manual E46 M3 and the IS keeps up, or even beats, the manual E46 M3s. In a straight line there is no doubt an IS can hold its own against an E46 M3, it just when you start to have to turn that the chassis dynamics in the Bimmer shine, and you will notice a difference.

As far as the being not far behind an M3 on a track, I guess that would depend a lot on the track, but the IS certain has the powerband to give an M3 a good run for its money on the right track. Something with lots of hard corners and fewer long straights, I'd have a hard time believing an IS would be anywhere near the M3, stock-for-stock.
