Rotten egg smell
Hey guys, what's going on ... This is an interesting problem. Whenever I accl. hard and stop, I can smell, what I can only describe as a rotten egg smell. It just started about a week ago, I thought it was a fluke, but it's now consistent. Does anyone else get this smell or something similar?
Car is a 2008 IS250 AWD with only 3300K miles.
Thanks
- Steven

It's your AC. I am assuming you are running your AC while you are performing these runs. When you WOT, your A/C turns off. This causes the egg smell. Do a test. Turn on the car and the air conditioning. Then turn off the A/C condenser. See if you get the smell.

The egg smell (sulphur) is traditionally the result of a catalytic converter problem. Many new cars used to suffer from this, but it's becoming more rare (My 2008 does it too after hard acceleration with no A/C on.). If you guys are saying it's the A/C, wouldn't that be more of a mildew (musty) smell? A/C's and mildew go hand in hand. Rotten egg smells goes to the catalytic. If there's more to the story and TSB, my apologies. I haven't researched this particular Lexus issue yet.

It also means that the car is dumping a lot of fuel into the engine and cant burn it all up and ending up being burned in the cats. it wont damage anything unless you constantly smell it.
Do a bit of research and find out what gasoline in your area has the lowest sulphur content. Around here (Edmonton, AB, Canada) that's Shell. The smell is severely reduced (but not eliminated) by choosing the right gas.
I've been searching for the solution to this and have found it. In the trunk there are pressure vents or air outlet vents, vent valve, rear quarter outlet vents, are the names they have been called. They are accessed from the trunk one on each side, under where the amp is and on the other side. They are black vents with a rubber flap these break or even come off which in turn allows the exhaust to enter the cab of the car. All you have to do is replace them. $20-$30 for each one!! Also will fix the issue with the stereo not working when it rains due to the condensation that builds up around the amp!! No need to replace your cats or anything else!! I'm telling you, check these first!!
