it not the speed thats the factor... like you can't do much when a group of like 12 dump trucks loaded with debris is spraying out all over the freeway behind you...which happened to me... people were either speeding up to pass them or slowing down really slow to avoid them... bleh there would be some law for trucks like such to cover their loads...
Good point, and good advice. I've learned that they can't be prevented completely but I've also learned that they can be drastically reduced simply by slowing down and not following too close behind the car/truck in front of you.
other than a clearbra, there's not much you can do except for wax and sealants. Even then the protection is not as good as a clearbra. my advice is to wax and seal your paint whenever possible. also don't drive behind trucks that have too high of a suspension without mudguards. occasionally they can drive over a small rock and lift it into the air. in that case, it'll hit your hood or your windshield. even the clearbra doesn't hold up against it too well sometimes.
for minute scratches, a good detail shop can fix them with some cut compound and polish. chips require touchup paint for quick fixes. once the chips are bad enough, you'll need a repaint or a new panel that's prepainted.
personally i didn't get the clearbra. occasionally i regret it but since it's too late, i've decided to either get a repaint later when it's bad enough or simply buy a new prepainted bumper. or if an accident occurs, have insurance pay for damages
