Erratic Tach
Something has been bothering me for some time now and I thought I would get it off my chest and see what you guys think.
On street driving I notice that when the car is downshifting the tachometer bounces to higher rpm. A little of it I think is normal because of lower gear. But if the car downshifts from 4 to 2 the bounce is pretty high, abut 300-400 rpm difference and I can clearly hear the car engine revving. I mentioned this to my dealer today and he said it is normal because of engine braking. The rental car that I got is a RX350 and it also has slight tach up and down but that is no more than 150. What you guys think ? Should I pester the dealer to look at it or just accpt as normal? Funny thing is I do not remember the car doing it when I got it initially. Now days my wife drives it most of the time and I drive only on occasions.

Have them reflash the ECU and see if that works. BTW my dad's ES350 had the same problem. Steps on the brakes and the tach needle bounced up. They reflashed the ECU and it went away.

Since my wife drives it most of the time these days, I suspect it is her way of driving caused the ECU to "learn" something. I was thinking of getting ECU reset too, but if it is her driving pattern, then it may come back I suspect. Thanks.

if you step on the brakes and the rev's are going up then something is wrong... But if you're using your paddles to down shift then that's normal. I'm on a MT and it happens to me all the time , makes a great vrrm sound too
