When do Illuminated Scuff Plates turn on?

When do Illuminated Scuff Plates turn on?
Forgive me if this has been posted before (I searched and didn't find an answer)... I have an '08 IS350 w/ X-Package and I'm supposed to have Illuminated Scuff Plates... but they never seem to illuminate! I saw them ONCE at night, so I figured it was a night thing... but now I've never seen them again.
When do they come on? What controls it? It's a small thing, but I like it, damnit. Can I make them come on all the time?

they only come on when the door is open, that is if you have that the interior lights come on when the door is opened, which is controlled by the door button by the sunroof sundial. the ylight up in the daytime and nightime but you only can see them at night for obvious reasons. so make sure you have that your interior lights come on when the door is opened and so will your door sills!
