3 Piece Wheels and Rain Driving

So I learned this the hard way yesterday driving in a rain storm.

On 3 piece wheels, the design of the barrel has a channel between the face and the rear of the wheel where the mount the tire. well when you wash the car or drive in rain...water sits in this channel.

If you are driving the rain stays in this channel especially if you are going 60mph and faster. Well this water throws the balance off like a biatch. The car feels like the wheels are about to fall off at 80mph with water in the barrels.

I read about this before but didn't believe it until it happened to me. I drove for a while and when it stopped raining i pulled into a gas station and the water was still in the barrels.

Oh well just another stupid flaw of 3 Piece wheels.

Oh man I havent tried driving in the rain yet...

Its a b!$@!$#%^ to clean these wheels. This is what I do after a car wash...
1. Using my chamois towel, i suck up the water inside.
2. I wipe the spokes as much as possible.
3. I drive it out because there are some water left in there.
4. Since I have polished lip, I polish the lip after [approx. 5 mins per wheel]

The water gathering problem is one of the reasons I don't prefer multipiece wheels. I swore them off but stupidly, I tried again. Bought some Racingharts in May. It was raining while they were being installed so I had to go through it to get home. The wheels were vibrating and I forgot about the water gathering thing. I thought the installers screwed up. I was on my way back and then I remembered. I have since sold the wheels. They looked great and rode perfectly but multipiece wheels are too much trouble.

A guy at the wheel shop said he has devised a way to reduce the water build-up. He lays a row if weights from the back of the face to the edge of the rim. It forces some of the water out reducing the vibration. Problem is now you have a bunch of weights on the wheel but he doesn't think that's a concern.

I'd rather have a nice 1 piece wheel.

Actually, I'd rather a nice multipiece wheel that was not so high maintenance but that doesn't exist cause you also have to baby them more to keep the good looks.

I have the same problem with mine. I took care of that by drive around the block after I washed the wheel and then I dry it.

You can't if you are driving and its raining. Got to go below 60mph when its raining.

I dont see a reason why you should be driving over 60 when it is raining anyway. But then again i guess people in bigger states that commute on interstates drive over 60 when it is raining.

Sorry for going off the thread a little but I have to reply.
I drive as fast as traffic allows in the rain because I want to distance myself from all the crap drivers out there. People drive like they are scared when it rains. Then we have jerks who are deeply involved in a cell phone call. I try to get as far ahead of them as I can.

I try to buy nice tires so that rain doesn't scare me. The times I go too slow are the times I have problems. On the interstate, I see no reason to drive slow....unless it's storming. I ain't no fool.

Back on topic.

Over the past 2 months, I have been trying to find a 1 piece wheel that has the look befitting a high end car. It's really hard to do. I decided to try the MRR GT1 but the manufacturer says it won't fir over the GS350 brakes without a spacer. It's a very good quality wheel and I would be satisfied with it for a while. Now I don't know what to get. Multipiece look fantastic but come with high price and high maintenance. The water gathering thing is like that extra twist of the knife in your gut.

We may as well stop complaining. It's no doubt multipiece looks the best and once you have tried them it's hard to go back.
