Am I getting BS'd?
Yeah. Deposits aren't really binding in any way. They're just a "good faith" gesture. Fact is another salesman (or even him) probably DOES have someone ready to buy the car. 350s don't sit on the lots for very long. It's probably a mixture of the two; he's trying to apply some pressure in order to seal the deal because another saleman has someone that's truly interested in the car. Just be polite and say "Go ahead and give it to them". They'll have another soon OR like you said, the other dealer has the same spec'd car ready to go. Just don't burn any bridges. You never know what is going to happen at the other dealer. Last thing you want is to go groveling back and face the fella again after you showed your rear end (not saying you would but you know what I mean)
Actually you are probably BS'ing him. In your post you say you are in negotiations with two other dealers. So, are you going to buy from the dealer that has the deposit or not? He probably senses the deal may fall through and he is protecting himself. Nothing wrong with that. He probably does have another buyer, so he wants you to either buy it or release it. He doesn't want to hold it any longer than he has to. The car business is competitive, that is why they try to close the deal while you are in the showroom. In my opinion you should be prepared to drive the car off the lot when you strike a deal, or no more than a day later unless there are extreme reasons why this isn't possible.
The prevailing attitude here is the dealer is at the mercy of the buyer's whims. The door swings both ways. At this point you are at his mercy if you want this particular car. If you can't pull the trigger you can't blame him, or say that he is BS'ing you.

i agree, even though i dislike dealers and thier tactics.....
If you have a deal, or are prepared to make the deal you should be prepared to purchase it that day, or play by thier rules.
good luck.

Funny coz I just read Consumer Reports car buying mistakes this morning. #1 on the list is yielding to pressure. It is a myth that federal law gives you 3 days to cancel an auto contract.
So it's a BS but I also agree with kilo 6 and Evitzee. Put a deposit if you're ready to deal - that is after finding the best deal around - but if you're in negotiation with two more dealerships it means you're not ready yet or still hasn't found the best deal around. The salesperson wants to earn money too you know. So if you're ready to buy then buy from him otherwise tell him to return your deposit and sell the car to someone else. After all you're in Cali. Shouldn't be hard to find an IS. Goodluck.

I put the deposit down because I plan to buy from him, he doesn't even know I am negotiating with anyone and I have made no gestures to suggest otherwise. The other negotiations are through internet managers so I could get a general idea about the price. I even told them (internet managers) outright that I was probably not going to buy from them and they are still giving me great service.
To be honest, unless the other dealers gave me a price that was $50+ less a month(for a lease), I was still going to stick with the guy I put a deposit with because of the friend/cousin relationship
I get where Evitzee and kilo are coming from though. As much as we might like to think that salespeople are soulless demons, they do have a family to take care of as well.

It's always a good idea to shop around. If it makes you feel better, use the other shopping numbers to go back to your "friend/cousin" and ask him to match the lowest price quote you got. Good luck.
