TPMS Light on "Check System": Question
I searched on these forums and I cannot find an answer. Hopefully someone can help me. I don't want to go to the dealer.
My wheels have my tire sensors in them. I switched my wheels out for the SEMA show to wheels without sensors and have recently put my old wheels back on with the sensors. It seems like the sensors aren't registering to the car. My "check system" light is on. I have filled all tires up to the specifications on the door jamb but to no avail the light is still on. I re-initated the system using the button to the left of the steering wheel but the warning light comes on right after it is done intializing.
Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any input on this issue?
Does anyone know if the spare tire has a sensor in it? My spare is missing after the SEMA show and I suspected that it could be the reason for the light coming on but I am not too sure.... Anyone know where to get another spare?
Thank you for your help in advance.

1. How long has it been since you took them off? sometimes it takes some time for them to register, maybe even a day or 2.
2. No, there is no TPS in the spare, and you can get a spare at any tire shop...even the dealer if you want the exact same ( although im not too big on the stock spare..the hubcap is yellow.)
If its been a while, then IMO, i would def go to the dealer since it is their problem...but if you do not want to, you can go to any authorized tire dealer and they should help you out since TPS is becoming mandatory for all vehicles. By 2008, all cars in production must have TPMS.

i hate the lexus TPMS. Its so annoying. They havent even gotten it down correctly in the IS, and it keeps messing everything up. Since you have coilovers...I'd def take it to a tireshop. Since TPMS is becoming so big, it is essential for these tire dealers to stay up to date on the info or they'll go out of business. I don't know if you have Just Tires over there, but i know for a fact that Just Tires know their info when it comes to TPMS. They actually do installations for TPMS into cars that do not have it as an option.
If they can't help you, then you might just have to take it to the dealership...Worst case scenario...they'll say they can't help you because of your aftermarket modifications, but technically you can switch back to your stock Coilovers, so they won't say anything. if they do, then i guess you may have to take it to another dealership, or switch back to your stock coilovers if you want to take it in.
Any other probs, just PM me if i dont get back to you on here. Good luck.

Are the sensors postition specific on the vehicle? I don't recall that each sensor must be in their original location on the car, but I can see this being a possiblity.
they sensors are attached to the valve stems of the wheel. They have to be right next to where the air is let in or let out, and the only place in the whole wheel where this is possible is next to the valve stems.
honestly, if i were you, i'd take the wheels to the dealer since the sensors may have gone bad, and they will replace them for you for free if they cannot solve the problems regardless of whether they have gone bad or not.

I've had the same situation few days ago... I had a ripped tire and had to put on a spare tire..and I had the check system light and the TPMS light on..so,I had to replace and get a new tire at the local tire shop since the dealer charged me so much for it. Afterwards, the Check System and the TPMS light were still on, so I brought it in to the Lexus dealer and they got rid of the light. They don't charge you anything..but since you have aftermarket rims, I doubt they'll charge you. If one of your sensors have a bit problem, it's pretty expensive to replace one. In my opinion, I think it all depends on how nice the Dealers are, so if one of the dealers says you will be charged, go to a different dealer.
Also, one of the mechanic told me the spare tire has a sensor also and showed me how to get rid of the TPMS light and the check system light off. He showed me outside the garage and since it was very windy, I didn't fully listen to what he was saying but next to the steering wheel, there is a < > button and a circle button in between. Press one of the > or < button to Tire pressure initializing mode and before you do this, your engine has to be shut off and has to be in ACC mode, like instead of pressing the brake and pressing the Start/Stop button to start the engine, just press the Start/Stop button. After you're in Tire Pressure Initialization mode, hold the circle button between the < > for a few seconds, and let go. The TPMS should be reset. Turn on your engine and check if the light is still on. I'm not tooo sure about this since I didn't listen very carefully but try it and tell me if it works. Hope this helps. GL!

A couple of months ago a nail was stuck in my Mercedes aftermarket wheel and caused a slow leak. It warned me. A blow out could've happened on the freeway.

Thanks for the help. I tried it with the ACC and not have the engine running and it initialized but the light is still on after I start the engine. I drove around for about 10-12 miles and the lght is still on. I think I may take it to a dealer soon unless someone else has any ideas.
My battery died or went into hibernation after the SEMA show and I am not sure if that had something to do with it. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks again for the help.
I agree, the Lexus implementation of the TPMS leave something to be desired. To the original poster: Are you sure you re-initialized the system properly? Here's how the Lexus Factory Service Manual details the procedure:
(1) Set the tire inflation pressure for all tires (including spare tire) to the specified value.
As far as going to the dealer goes, it depends entirely upon how nice or greedy your dealer is. Here's something else I found in the FSM:
-A radio device of similar frequency is used in the vehicle.
-A lot of snow or ice is stuck to the vehicle, especially onto the wheels and around the wheel houses.
-Tire chains are used.
-If tires with tire pressure sensors are used, but another tire set has been selected using the tire pressure warning select switch mode.

The Tire Pressure Warning Receiver & ECU can be initialized as follows:
(1) Set the tire inflation pressure for all tires (including spare tire) to the specified value.
Tire Inflation Pressure kPa (kgf/cm2, psi)
Front: 240 (2.4, 34)
Rear: 260 (2.6, 37)
(2) Put the multi-information display into the multi-switch display mode to display “TIRE PRESSURE”.
(3) Keep the satellite switch pressed for three seconds or more with the power source IG-ON.(4) The “PRESURE INITIAL” displays in the multi-information display, the tire pressure warning light blinks three times and the initialization mode starts.
(5) The initialization is completed when all of the tire pressure sensor signals are received.
(5) The initialization is completed when all of the tire pressure sensor signals are received.
TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM OPERATION PRECAUTIONS
If any of the conditions listed below exists, the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly.
-The areas, facilities or devices that use similar radio frequencies are located in vicinity of the vehicle. If any of the conditions listed below exists, the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly.
-A radio device of similar frequency is used in the vehicle.
-A lot of snow or ice is stuck to the vehicle, especially onto the wheels and around the wheel houses.
-The battery of the sensor has been depleted.
-Wheels without tire pressure sensors are used.
-Non-genuine TOYOTA wheels are used.-Wheels without tire pressure sensors are used.
-Tire chains are used.
-If tires with tire pressure sensors are used, but another tire set has been selected using the tire pressure warning select switch mode.
So technically, they can deny you warranty service based upon your having aftermaket wheels.

That's not quite accurate. There are actually two antennae dedicated to receiving the TPM signals (one in the front right fender and another in the left rear wheel well). As long as the TPM is inside the tire (or wheelbarrow or whatever) and detects the proper air pressure, the system will function normally.

Maybe. See post #16 in this thread.

I just pulled mine off and stuck them in a preasurized canister...... worked for me. I have been driving for 16 years without them and stil dont see any benifit of them, other then being another nanny light and a hassle.
I will try to re-initiale the system again today. I will check all the tires one last time. Do you know if having too much pressure like 36lbs front and 39lbs rear matters at all?
