Yea... its a wide angle camera... so backing out of a spot when there are two big trucks on both sides of you is a lot easier. But I still look...because there are times when a car is driving by fast, and you cant see them on the camera.
Becareful sometimes you cant see people walking. Happened to me a lot of times, I look at camera, start backing up slowly, then I look at the center mirror and BAM a person right there.
I check the camera soon as I put it in reverse to make sure nothing is behind me like a small child, then I turn my head because you never know what is coming from the left or right on the camera.
I still can't tell how far I am from other cars or objects by looking at that display. My previous car, an M45, had guide lines that showed distance and also the path your car was taking as you backed up. The guide lines even changed as you turned the wheel, so you'd know exactly where you were and where you were going.
I find the IS's backup cam to be good only as a quick check to make sure there's nothing immediately behind me. Then I twist around and look like always.

that's really cool. I wish our car had something like that to guide us. Like you said, I can't tell how far I am from the other car either when backing up so I still have to look in back of me as if I didn't have a camera.
you guys really can't see how far you are from an object behind you? i can back up and be able to stop within a few inches from hitting the car behind me. with the camera, you can see your license plate and the edge of the bumper so as long as you see air between your bumper edge and the object behind you.. then you're good.
the only bad thing that i always do is that i forget to leave the car behind me enough space to pull out...
