Nobody said mold forms on the filter. But if you have mold in your HVAC system, the filter will capture it.
Steve
I've had the same problem, especially in my SC430.
When I change the Cabin Filter, I will spray either Lysol of HVAC Cleaner as far into the system as I can through the filter opening. I will also spray into the system through the cabin vents and the intake vents under the hood.
I live in Aruba and also have the same problem but only after speeding with the car. It seems like exhaust fumes just find a way through the vents however its smells like rotten eggs. Driving under normal conditions has not produced that smell.
I used to have the smell when I had the original carbon-impregnated filter (which they ended up not selling anymore due to complaints of a musty odor), but when I changed it out for just a mechanical cabin air filter, haven't had any smells since.
But I don't know if that's what you folks are talking about
I think this is a design issue with Toyota cars. I drive my 2IS only twice a week and I get that foul smell almost at every start up. My previous 1IS had similiar problem but just not as bad.
Never experienced the same problem with BMW, Audi, or Honda.
