Leave it on the battery, I think it will be out of the range, but than the heat from the engine might not be good for it.

Cool

OMG I'm glad I just read this. Yesterday I noticed I had both of my fobs in my purse by mistake. Well I put my purse in my trunk after work with one of the fobs in it and kept the other fob. When I got to the gym I locked the car my usual way by pushing the lock inside the car. Walking away from the car I heard the two beeps to tell me that the fob was in the car so I hit the lock button on the fob to make sure the doors were locked. I had no idea that someone could go to the trunk and push the button and get in the trunk because the fob in the trunk wouldn't let the trunk lock I just tested it now and sure enough the trunk was not locked. So yesterday anyone could have gotten in there. I'm very lucky. Thanks so much for this info!!!! A real public service announcement

Is there any way you could "shield" the key when left in the trunk so it didn't transmit? You know, like Superman can't see through lead . Any thoughts?

Aloha

I just picked up my is350 last week and the salesman told me that if you go swimming leave the fob in the trunk tire well and lock the doors. Take the metal key with you. The spare tire well is shielded and you can open the trunk with the key and grab the fob to open the doors.

Well, it's a passive rfid system... So, i would think if you put some metal around it, it may confuse the signals just enough. How much metal is the question though (especially since it can read yoru fob through the car up to 3' away). I know on 13.56mhz systems, a few extra keys will screw the signal up. Not sure about the lexus system...

Okay I got it. Before leaving your car, open the trunk. Then reach in the glove compartment and push the button to turn off the remote trunk open feature. Get out, take small metal key out of fob. Place fob in trunk and close. Push the button on the door handle to lock the doors. It worked for me. Then you use the metal key to open the trunk and get your fob.

Aloha,
Larry

^^^were you actually able to accomplish this? because if you were, maybe you can detail the steps more accurately in case anyone wants to try this. you may have found the "bug" in the system that i once found before accidently involving the trunk but what i am normally getting is whenever you try to lock your doors if there is a key detected in the trunk area, it will reject and the doors will not lock or unlock....regardless of the glovebox trunk override button setting.

Ken,

I tried it just before the post and it worked. However just to be absolutley certain I have the sequence right I will print my post, take it to the car and try it later today when I go for a swim. Maybe I locked the doors before I put the fob in the trunk??? Now you have me wondering.

Aloha,
Larry

yeah check this out. when you close the trunk lid, is the driver's door open or close? when you push the button on the door handle, do the lights flash and all the doors lock? can you repeat this over and over?

when i was experimenting, i was able to sometimes lock my key in the trunk but it wasn't perfect and i attributed that to the key in the trunk simply not being detected. it does make sense that the trunk button would not open the trunk against the activated override button even with the key fob sitting in the trunk but what doesn't make sense is locking the 4 car doors when the key is detected in the trunk. when i push the door handle button i get a long reject beep and if i activate the door lock inside when i slam the driver's door, it won't persist and he doors unlocks. because the key fob is detected in the trunk. unless removing the hard key from the fob has some effect....

what i do know is opening and closing the doors and trunk in a certain sequence can potentially confuse the system and allow everything to lock up on you. normally this confusion wouldn't be a problem locking you out because you wouldn't have the trunk override button active and you could simply press the trunk button and open the trunk.

One more try, here is what worked for me:

Before leaving your car, open the trunk. Then reach in the glove compartment and push the button to turn off the remote trunk open feature. Get out, take small metal key out of fob. Push the button on the door handle to lock the doors. Place fob in trunk and close. Then use the metal key to open the trunk and get your fob.

Aloha,

great info! I totally forgot about the glove compartment button and I had to leave my car in valet (unavoidable this one time ) and was stressed since I couldn't figure out how to lock them out of trunk access.

I didn't think you had to lock your car in Kansas anyway.

This does indeed work. By switching the button in the glove compartment, it disables the outside trunk button. So if you lock the doors, then put the fob in the trunk, you will be unable to retrieve the fob unless you have the metal key. Great tip for those days on the beach.
