Default Paint Chrome Grill

Anyone know how to properly paint over chrome? I know I could take it to a paint shop but was hoping I could do it myself, any suggestions for painting (BLACK) over the chrome frame around the grill?

To properly paint it, you would need to strip the chrome. I'm sure it can be done without, but for proper painting, you would want the best surface for paint adhesion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the grill is ABS plastic with chrome plating?

Mike is 100% right on this one. I talked to my paint guy about this specifically, and he said the most important thing would be to strip all the chrome off. Once that's done, it's your typical automotive paint procedure.

He also told me that, although technically it is possible to paint over the chrome, the paint wouldn't hold for any more than a year or two - it would begin to flake and fall off. And yes, the grill is ABS with chrome plating. Hope this helps!

So could i just use some sort of sand paper to strip it all off and then buy the correct color pain and clear coat? What else would i use to strip it? Anyone know what type of pain works best or would be best?

i would use sandpaper to avoid any cuts that a razor or knife might leave.

I would sand paper it off first, make sure the sanding points are even on the grill, then prime and paint. Two or three coats if necessary too.

What type of sand paper? Is there a special kind or grade?
