Default Strange behavior from Smart Access system

Last night I stopped at a gas station. My passenger hops out and goes inside the store to get something while I remain in the car. As soon as he closed the door and walked away from the car, the "key not detected" message appears I sat there puzzled for a few seconds and then take the key out of my pocket and place it next to the start button, the message disappears. It then comes on again as I'm leaving the parking lot and stays on for about 5-10 seconds. After that the car behaved normally for the rest of the night.

Low battery possibly? But that still doesn't explain why I would get the message when someone else exits the car.

Did the passenger have a smart key? the car might've been using his/her key instead of yours. Happens to me when my bro and I both have the smart keys on us. Sometimes, mine would be use, sometimes, his would be used. I guess whoever unlocks and enters the car first.

If that's not the case, chalk it up to an anomaly. It'll happen occasionally but it's nothing to be concerned.

I hope you mean you both have a smart key for the same car....if not, your saying that a smartkey from another lexus can be used to start your car...which i dont believe is possible

Maybe there was some sort of interference from another smart key in the area.

Did you stop at a Mobil station? I wonder if their smart pass key readers might have been interfering with the antennas on the car.

If I had to guess on the timing on the "Key not detected" message (where it appeared after your passenger closed the door), tt's probably that the vehicle tests for the key after the doors open and close. (Just a guess).

It wasn't a Mobil station. My passenger didn't have a smart key (of any kind). I guess it was just a one-time hiccup in the system, I haven't been able to duplicate it.

I had that sort of problem with my car too just a few days ago. The car didn't respond to the smart key at all, and no buttons work even the buttons inside the car. Seems like the computer froze so I had to unplug battery and reset it. Nothing yet so far since then.

My smart key occassionally does wierd things. Yesterday I grabbed the door handle to unlock it and it beeped five times as it unlocked.

If the car was trying to tell me something, it wasn't doing a very good job of making itself understood.

Dying battery perhaps? The battery can prematurely die if it is often nearby other electronics such as cell phones, PSP, garage openers, etc...

I was under the impression that if it beeped extra times that means the car has been shaken or disturbed in some way....not sure where I remember hearing that though- anyone confirm?
