Maybe a little bit, but probably not by much. Question is how many ponies would this filter release? I would def keep the 2nd filter screen in the air box as this one will most likely allow more particles to get through it.

don't expect to get any noticable hp out of a filter if not any hp. even tone really.

Agree. If there was a way to get any additional power just by switching to a different air filter (and still filter out enough crud), they would have done it at the factory.

All other things being equal, you have to decrease filtering capability/capacity to increase flow.

not true...

when you consider that toyota prides itself on long running cars, they put incredibly restrictive filters in to keep the engine as clean as possible. almost to the point of overkill.

a replacement filter will increase performance. maybe not statistically but throttle response can be improved.

also, lexus uses the most cost effective means of air filtration while keeping the engine clean. HKS *could* employ a more expensive solution that is relatively as clean but allows for greater air flow.

They do what any filter does. For performance gains though, they'll 'filter' less, which allows for more air into the motor, but at the expense of more contaminents.

have you tested the filters or seen any tests of the filters that Toyota uses? If not, then you have no basis to make this claim and you're doing everyone a disservice by making it.

Could you elaborate on this?

Best point so far. As you concede, 'could' is the operative word. Maybe they use an expensive material or maybe they use a cheaper than stock material. You don't know. None of us do, yet. Just because a part is 'aftermarket' doesn't mean it'll do anything. How many aftermarket parts out there don't do anything or even hurt performance?

err actually yea i've seen plenty. toyotas typically have some of the cleanist 100k mileage engines you'll find w/ all variants equal.

to gain HP, more power to the wheels much exist. an airfilter with the design of remaining clean but less obtrusive to air can increase initial response by allowing more air into the throttle body initially. through the powerband however it might not be as recognizable.

i never said the HKS was going to add 20hp or anything. its a drop in filter, and history has taught us they rarely decrease performance. changing the DESIGN of the air filter unit can however.
