You don't need the other side of the relay. You could of put the other side of the switch to pin 3 instead of pin 6, but I wasn't sure how far you had gone based on the diagram.
I just thought it was easier to say forget the wires to the LED.

Ha, no worries... didn't think you were condescending. I haven't started yet bc I wanted to make 100% certain of what I was doing.
I'm going to wire things as follows:
1. Cut the blue wire.
2. Relay Pin 1 = blue wire from loom
3. Relay Pin 5 = blue wire from Nav unit
4. Relay Pin 3 = tapped orange wire & one side of the switch
5. Relay pin 7 = other side of the switch
6. Relay pin 8 = ground (from whatever source)

When I received your original post and PM you had described the wire assignments incorrectly with the blue and orange wires being reversed. It appears that this is corrected now. To do this modification without the LED, a SPDT relay would be fine since the second arm is only used for the LED. It was noted in the thread that you could also tap the pin 3 connection for one side of the switch and the other side to the relay coil (here it is pin 7 on this DPDT relay). Another easy way to find the ground is to just loosen a screw on the head unit chasis and attach the ground wire there. This would keep you from having to cut or tap into another factory wire.

Since drawing and posting the schematic for this modification I have received a number of PM's about it. Everyone has been able to get it to work as described. The single biggest problem has been an occasional mis-read of the diagram. Once that was resolved it work perfect.
Therefore, I wonder if you have a specific question or concern I can help you with in order that you will feel confident in this modification.
I am really interested in doing this mod for my rx400h. I would love to have the ability to turn the backup camera on at will. I am not all that great at wiring, but I am ok. My main question is, couldn’t I run a wire from a toggle switch to the blue wire (soldering the blue wire and the wire from the switch together), with a 12v supply (probably from a cigarette lighter) running to the switch? The idea being that when the switch is on the camera will come on as a result of the 12v power going to the blue wire. The camera will still work when the vehicle goes into reverse because the blue wire is soldered together along with the switch wire. I loaded a crude picture of what I am talking about. Will this work? Any thoughts?
When you switch across the switch, it will short the positive and negative and blow your boots off.
It is also a good idea to break into the blue wire rather than connect to it as you would be feeding the 12v back into the system, not just the screen to switch into the camera mode.
What you need to do is apply 12v to the blue wire at the screen but stop it going back into the vehicle wiring. You need a changeover switch at least to do this. It has 3 points on. One is common to the other two, depending which way it is switched.
Switch in one way, it is as normal Lex wired. The other way applies 12v the blue wire on the screen side, but disconnects the blue within the rest of the vehicle wiring.
You could pick up the 12v from the cig lighter, but as others have pointed out, the orange which is already at the back of the unit has a 12v supply anyway - just tap off this.
Thank you so much for the post. So the key to a simple switch mod is using a SPDT switch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch). Would a switch like this work?
