Default Bent rims anyone?

hey guys,

i've only had my rims for about a month, and i already have bent my right front hitting a small pothole. i have already ordered a replacement rim. my rims are tsw mondellos 19x8. i am running toyo t1r's, 235/35/19, inflated to 42psi.

are you guys having any problems with your rims? i live in the wash d.c. area, and the street surfaces are far from perfect.

The problem isn't D.C. roads (and believe me, New England is far far worse than anything you'll find in D.C.) it's your wheels.

A 19" wheel with a 235/35 series tire leaves precious little sidewall between the road and your rim. That and the fact that a vast majority of aftermarket wheels are made with inferior alloys, and you end up with bent wheels. Not much you're going to be able to do to get around that, other than perhaps springing for something forged rather than cast.

I have posted bent wheel information in the past and this topic has been discussed many times.

Instead of posting to only those reading the IS section, you should do an advanced search for "bent rims".

The TSW's are not known for their strength. Only forged rims and other quality made rims by HRE, I-Forged, BBS, etc. will stand a MUCH better chance from bending, but in the end NO rim is 100% gonna guarantee to be bend proof.

There is a lot of information here:

I had 19" 3-piece Racing Hart wheels, and anyone who knows rims, knows they are not cheap, they were bent, dented, dinged and one was practically smashed in half on the inner side after hitting a pot hole, it was luckily fixable. I also had 4 of 5 bent rims on my old IS. I swerve and avoid bumps, but here in NJ.....well, nough said. You will do much more damage to your rims, its part of the price to pay....sorry to say.

This is precisely why I have forged 18" wheels coming in. Sure, 19"s would look better but the downsides to 19"s and 20"s besides thin sidewalls are just not worth it IMO.

After you get the new wheel, get your old one repaired as a spare

What kind of Toyo's are you running?
I had Toyo Proxies on my Camaro and they had a really stiff sidewall. I loved those tires.

Man....what kind of potholes are you guys who bend wheels hitting?

I've found that the strongest wheels I've owned are:
  • Work
  • iForged
  • Yokahama (Advan/AVS)
  • Rays (TE37)

Some of the softest were Racing Hart (real RH), RH Evolutions (fake RH), HRE (yes, they are soft).

I've gone thru 4 tires on my outgoing 03 IS... Im really hoping that the O***s on the AWD will hold up a little better. In Newark a few weeks back I lost two tires at once, that was a fun night. Lexus Roadside is worthless btw.
