Default Proposal: Modify Nav System DVD

A friend of mine told me that some Acura enthusiasts are customizing their Navigation systems by actually modifying the contents of Navigation DVD. Possibilities include:
  • Disable boot up nag screen
  • Change background/button themes
  • Modify text on screen buttons
I get my IS350 in a week and will start working on this. My hex is pretty weak, but I'll see what I can find out. If anyone else has tried this and has any input, that would be great.
It seems that this type of mod might be safer than ripping into the dash since you can always replace the DVD with the original one provided by Lexus. I'll let you guys know how things go.
Cheers.

Me and my friend both had Acura CL-S and he modded and hacked his disk but not to a great extent. He did a lot of things (I don't remember all) but he never could really get rid of the I-Agree. I have heard it could be done tho.

I remember reading up on that on the Acura Forums.

Alot of people with the new Gen Navi's are hacking it like *****. It's nuts.

Won't know until someone scopes out the Lexus DVD Disk.

The I-Agree screen is not programed onto the NAV CD.

I just removed the NAV CD. If you turn on the ignition without the
NAV CD installed, it still comes up with the I-Agree screen.
Incidently, it looks like the disk is a double layer DVD that
contains 7.2Gb of data. It has a lot of .kwi data files on it.

That's too bad about the I-Agree screen, but thanks for checking it out. Another problem is that I don't have a double layer burner, so even if I hack through the DVD I won't be able to burn it back. Looks like I'll have to pick one up.

Guys as long as this conversation stays within the boundary of a 'how to' for an individual owner updating their own DVD software and using that burned DVD themselves that's fine.

If it turns towards reproducing DVD software (hacked or otherwise) the thread will be locked or removed and the parties who instigate the piracy conversation may have administrative action taken.

There is no problem with the thread so far, but I want everyone to understand we take a very strong stance against software piracy threads, including burning nav DVDs for sale or distribution...

Just trying to get ahead of the curve so this thread can stay open and be productive. If someone is successful in getting this to work please post a DIY to share with others, but offering to burn copies and distribute them to others (for sale or free) will result in being banned from the forum.

I'm not sure that Tuxlex's test has completely ruled out eliminating the lawyer screen. It remains within the realm of possibility that new DVD map releases could contain firmware updates to the navigation system software that are applied the first time they are inserted.

Well said! Thank you for the word of caution. This thread will definitely remain a HOW-TO.
Cheers.

It is behind the digital clock. The panel with the clock pops off.

Hey, what a great idea... I'll rip my nav DVD tonight. Does anyone know if you get the warning WITHOUT a NAV DVD inserted? I'd guess yes, and the DVD has nothing to do with it. Still worth ripping the DVD to see what else we might be able to do.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, this test, performed by Tuxlex, does not rule out the possibility of removing the nag screen. It is well within the realm of possibility that the DVD contains (or has the ability to contain) a firmware image to update the software in the nav system when it is inserted.
