But I think Edmunds is referring to the old IS reliability to the new IS body. Who knows how good the 2nd Gen IS will be in 5 years? There are already a couple of trouble spots with the new IS, and although it doesn't cost extra to fix (recalls fixed for free), who knows what other costs may pop up in the future.
As nice as the article is, we have to be a bit realistic. Lexus is "less expensive" to upkeep compared to other entry-level luxury performance sedans out there. However, we can only corrolate low cost of ownership with the first gen IS, not the second.

There are many assumptions baked into these calculations.
But what usually determines these comparisons is projected depreciation. And the old IS has held its value very well.
Oddly, if you actually look at the numbers the Acura TL comes in way below the IS, 52k vs. 60k over five years.
