I think this would actually be a great idea. I've found that the tray when opened is the perfect size for my cell phone but the ash tray scratches it up.

You can take the ashtray out, there is a lever you need to pull and the ashtray will lift right out.

$169 (plus shipping and handling) seems VERY high to just take out the ash tray. Isn't there a less expensive solution?

Once you take it out, is the space under the compartment good for storage of coins? Or are there holes leading into the center dash?

There is no hole. There's a small compartment that can fit something the size of a deck of cards. The cigarette lighter attachment cannot be removed. Pretty small enough for coins, your key(s), etc.

That price is very expensive indeed for a OEM JDM part.

Looking to pick it up when I'm Japan.

Gotta fork over the $$$ for JDM goodness.

But for temp, Remove ashtray and just throw coins in there!

Oh indeed! Let me re-spray one of your buttons with a TV stencil.

Yeah, $169 seems a little steep for that little thing. By the looks of that picture, it seems that you would loose the cigarette lighter though.

It's in between the ashtray & the lighter. You'll feel a plastic lever. Just press it, and up comes the ashtray!
