Default Stud Problem

anyways.. i put on my rims... and after about.. 1 week, i hear sounds in the back

so i stop... what do i see? 2 lugnuts GONE

i was like... so basically i jacked up my car, took off my other lugnuts, seems like one of my studs is pushed in.. it is now just chilling in the rotor.. and my other stud is fine.. all my other lugnuts are fine.. i dont know what happened, since i have aftermarket wheels,, idont think lexus would cover this

couldnt put back my stocks cause im in san diego for school, and my stocks are back at home.. (about to be sold, hopefully)

HOPEFULLY Lexus will cover this under warranty... it should be a easy fix.. *prays to god*

they gave me a camry as a loner.. cause im under 21

just thought i'd like to share.. what do u guys think went wrong? i installed the wheels myself.. maybe i didn't tighten two of the lugs tight enough?..

this sucks..

They may not cover it. Something like that sounds like a problem caused by the person who installed the new wheels.

1) The 2 lugs that went MIA, after the new wheels are installed you should drive 100 miles, then retorque the lugs. The shop should have told you this.

2) The Missing Stud, is it broke, os is there a hole there? If its broke, its def the installers fault. If its missing... thats weird

replacing an MIA Stud is normally not too expensive at NTB, like 40-50. at lexus though... oil changes are $60. (WHEREas they are 20-30 elsewhere)

ouch for one stud. Damn. Was the stud broken or missing?

I would see if NTB could help you, you still have 4 studs on the wheel. Just buy 3 lugs, put 2 on, and go to NTB

Sounds like whoever installed the aftermarket wheel way over tightened them and pulled/cracked the stud. I'd definitely be talking to them.

What I want to know is this.

What type of lugs do the OEM wheels take? "Tuner"/(cone) or Acorn?

What type of lugs did your aftermarket wheels take? My guess is cone style.

Then finally, what lugs did you use on the aftermarket wheels?

If you used your OEM lugs and they are Acorn style on your aftermarket wheels which need cone style lugs then that would explain why they fell off. I have seen people do this and have wheels just fall off on the road.

The acorn nuts can't seat fully and although they get tight, there is no resistance (because of the small surface area actually touching between the wheel and lugnut). This makes it very easy for them to loose torque with all the expanding/contracting/vibrating. The nuts get loose, then slowly vibrate off. Loose enough lugnuts and it becomes harder for 2 or less studs/lugs to hold the wheel and those usually just break off.

Not sure why a stud would get pushed into the rotor, though. Maybe the rotors expand enough with the heat that they get loose and it just worked itself back in once the nut was gone.
