Default CD -> DVD conversion question

I have a question that possibly those who've pulled their CD/Nav units can answer.

Do any of you think it's possible to replace the 6-CD drive with a 6-DVD drive? (I've asked Luis Salazar at Carson Lexus to check on ordering a replacement part.) On computers such units are essentially plug and play. These two may have the same input connector.

I'm not interested in changing the sound system to include a center channel, etc, but simply want the DVD player capability.

Reading and processing a DVD requires a head unit that has the necessary software (and codecs). So no, you can't just switch out the optical drive. On a computer, it's true that the drive parts are interchangeable, but DVD-ROM drives also ship with drivers that use the main microprocessor to handle the decoding operations; you don't have that luxury in a stereo system.

I was wondering this too...

Anyone have any ideas (or better PRICES) about swapping the standard CD drive for the DVD drive?

Someone out there must have some idea...
