Working on a 2010 IS350c that was over heated. From everything I see you have to take the upper oil pan off to get the timing cover off.
I am trying to do a head job but do not have a lift or sealed garage to pull the motor. But seems you can not get the heads off without pulling the motor. Am I correct in this thought or is there a way to get the heads off without pulling the motor?
Thanks

Let's say you get the HB off, there are two studs at the bottom of the block, if those come out, it may be possible to do this without pulling the oil pans. You will have sore back when done. Adding to this is at least two dowel pins on the front cover.
Keep us posted and best of luck!
Question: with cost of gaskets, machine work, and labor, have you thought about buying used engine and rent a space to do a swap?
I found this some time ago, taagoa look, its in your future.

Correct me if I am wrong, I thought the pickup tub was bolted to the timing cover so that was the main reason you had to take the upper oil pan off to get those bolts off then that allowed you the ability to get the timing cover off?
I like to rebuild this motor as its an evil I know. Other than he running it out of coolant twice its been well taken care of. So other than decking the heads and refreshing the seals/gaskets/chain its a good motor. I have been a tech for several decades so rebuilding is not the issue. Just my lack of shop/lift is the main sticking point right now. In the process of building a shop by that is maybe 6 months away.
Thanks for your help and filling in any blanks I have.

Hopefully you can find some other options to get it pulled out.
