I have a 2003 IS300 55k miles, manual transmission clunks when upshifting from 1-to-2 and 2-to-3. I have searched the forums and read a lot of other threads that mention the clunking noise as being "normal." I was hoping to have this issue discussed here. For those of you who claim it is normal, are you saying it
with authority from a dealership or lexus representative?
because you are an employed automechanic (not DIY)?
because you have it, too?
The first two would be comforting, the last is not.
Thanks guys. I took the car into a mechanic and he said the sound was too subtle to worry about it. I don't think it's subtle but I guess I haven't driven many Lexus cars.
Depending on my speed and how I am on the clutch, I have a kind of dull thud coming from the rear. Car was meticulously maintained. Not sure if it's normal. Car is silent other than that.
I have changed the transmission fluid and the rear differential fluid, no improvement.
I have noticed that if I shift very slowly from 2->3, there is no clunking noise. I don't think I'm that hard on this car...my other car is a Honda Fit and it performs beautifully.
