p0440 EVAP Dealership diagnosis and part numbers for fix
Hey guys,
Posted an intro yesterday.
Today I got my car back from the dealership with three parts to replace.
1: "ROLL OVER VALVE" AKA "FUEL TANK OVER FILL CHECK VALVE ASSEMBLY" PART NO:7739053010 ($27.23 ON SEWELLPARTS.COM W/ CL MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT)
2: CHECK VALVE GASKET PART NO: 7717712020 ($4.03 ON SEWELLPARTS.COM W/ CL MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT)
3: "CHARCOAL CANISTER ASSEMBLY PARK NO: 7774053011 ($318.68 ON SEWELLPARTS.COM W/ CL MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT)
Basically, the roll over valve keeps the gas from exiting the vehicle in case of a roll-over and is located above the fuel tank on the passenger side. One would need to drop the tank to replace this. The dealership wanted to charge me $600-$700 for that fix alone. That equates to around $600 in labor for that one part, seeing as its a $30 part. The charcoal cannister seems a little more reasonable for a dealerships labor. all together the bill has me cranking out $1363.54...
No thanks! I bought the parts from Sewell today and 2-dayed them so I will update this weekend with details on the repair and also the status of the p0440 evap code. I will be getting my state emissions inspection before the end of the month and I will let you guys know how it goes!

Update*
So I decided to forgo the dealership and do it for 6 big ones less. It was about 8 hours worth of labor and it was pretty straight forward. Drop the tank, replace the parts. I replaced the Charcoal cannister, the Roll over valve and the gasket. Everything looked good except for a hose that was cracked. The dealership made no mention of that before hand, but luckily it wasn't something that needed to be order. I drove for around 50 miles and the "check engine" light reappeared. I diagnosed it and came up with the same code P0440. Cleared it and drove another 80 miles and all was well. Got it inspected and passed!!
Next up is the rear differential and control arm bushing.

Sorry, no pics. I will breakdown it down better in the future.
By the way, the charcoal canister was not that straight forward, as It is located in the trunk. Not difficult to replace, just tricky to find at first.

Good info here. I might be Pm'ing you for a bit of help if my charcol canister is needing replacement. I am currently throwing the p0440 CEL on my 02 ES300. So far I have replaced gas cap, and found hoses missing and disconnected from airbox, fixed those and it came back on within a 100 miles.

Your problem is the roll over check valve on top of fuel tank. Part number 77390-30071 for valve and 77177-33010 for gasket. It is located on top of the gas tank and a real motherfuker to get to from underneath. You have to removed exhaust, heat shields, drive shaft, lower tank about 8 inches and fight like a biatch to get the connector off. It took me 4 hours with a full shop of tools and lift. the easier and better solution is to study gas tanks on eBay to identify where the valve is ( Passenger side just left of drive shaft hump towards the front of the tank) and then carefully cut a hole on the floor board after you the rear passenger seat. there is a video on you tube that a guy does this on an IS 300. Location appears to be the same but part numbers are different. Use what i wrote above. Mine would stink like fuel also and randomly throw a P0440 code. they crack on top, i couldn't see until i soaped (after removal) and blew in the little hose connection, the whole thing is cracked. Everybody is probably cracked. If emissions were so important they should make them life time warranty, then they would be designed not to fail!!!!
