Default how does NOS work?

honestly guys (and girls) I need to know how nitros oxide works for a term paper at UVA. I know it sounds rediculous, but hey, its pretty cool too. if you know what goes on with it pls tell me, but if you have a good link that would be great. Thanks

Im pretty sure all it does is drastically lower the temperature of the fuel air mixture making the air much more dense. But then again I may be wrong.
