Default New Member Needs Advice - Torque Convertor

I am a novice at autos and need some advice. I called MO at SRT and he said the best first mod would be a torque convertor, $950 plus install of about $400. Can anyone explain to me about a torque convertor, what it does, where it would go, ect.? He said it would improve the entire band from low to high. Also, any recommendations for first mods and are the easy to install yourself? I am looking at SRT/Race ECU or Area 51 w/BB, HKS Dragger II Exhaust and maybe toyomoto headers. Can someone also explain about headers and how easy it would be to install? Finally, how do these mods effect warranty and do I need to reinstall factory parts for inspection.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer this post.
