Navigation retrofit
Hey guys,
I am new to the this forum. About a year ago I bought an IS 300 SportCross and I'd like to start modding it.
Excuse my screen name - I just dont want to have a tons of screen names on different forums. If you feel like flaming go ahead. It is true, I am more of an Audi guy but so far the two cars are good friends and keep each other company in the garage. ;-) So if they can get along - why can't we?
One thing I'd like to add would be a navigation system - ideally OEM and then add bluetooth to it.
The next one would be to turbocharge the engine - I am afraid I will get lost here in the offerings.
Once I get to that point I will ask this community's help - until then maybe you can help me with the nav retrofit questions.
Is it even possible and how expensive will it get?
thank you in advance.

I have the navi, The navi in the IS isnt all that good, The only reason i like navi is because you can control the climate and audio controls from it, but in the IS you cannot.. Its okay for when you get lost but i mean how often does that happend.
OEM NAV isn't that bad. My friend has an aftermarket system with touchscreen and other fancy stuff, but even then I still like the OEM system better.
There are some nice integration features you get w/ OEM system. The NAV gets speed and steering signals from the car so it can guess your car's position even when GPS signal is weak. It's also connected to the car's light sensors, so the display changes color and brightness to make it easier on your eyes.
And you can use it to control audio if you install the voice command module
OEM NAV is also pretty intuitive. My friend's Pioneer system is a mess. It has a button called "ESC" to go from audio menu back to the main menu... what is this, MS-DOS?
But it's an old system so there is no Bluetooth integration. You need to look elsewhere if this is important to you.

most dealers won't even quote you for retrofitting OEM nav, its that much of a PITA to do. possible yes, but it makes no sense $$$ or time wise for what you end up with.
what you could do is build the factory nav housing (~$220 unmotorized) and fit a 7" screen of your choice in there. a double din unit won't fit, but the screen will so you could either use one with RGB inputs for an external nav system or use a carputer with nav software on it.
or you could get the JDM double din dash kit and install something like the new pioneer D3, that way you get nav, dvd, xm, sirius, ipod, etc... with a close to stock look, plus its a lot easier to use a touchscreen right by the shifter esp. if you have a 5MT.
or you could just spend 1/5 of the $$$, get a tomtom and call it a day, thats what I ended up doing. plus its nice being able to take it from car to car and use the PC interface
and as far as turbos go... boost isn't cheap. if you do it cheap you're going to have problems IMO. do the research, get a reputable kit from a reputable vender, and pay the $$$$$ for proper tuning. don't expect to drop 5k on a turbo and call it a day, unless you really know what you're doing or have hookups, 7-8 is more realisitic if you're going to do it RIGHT.
EDIT: if you haven't already, register at my.is as well, it's far more active than here as far as IS300s go. lots of good boost info and nav info in the stickies there.
