Default check engine light on....

I have an '01 IS with 69K. The check engine light has come on. recently Car is running fine, I think it is just a faulty sensor. Anybody else have issues like this?

I spoke to dealer via phone, he thinks it might be a loose gas cap. I would prefer not to drop the $100 to do a diagnostic and wonder if the light will go off by itself after a while.

You need to go by Autozone for free testing. The light can be ANYTHING. I had my car flash a code once and it kicked the light. It was the catalyst code which could have been anything from a bad cat convertor to a bad o2 sensor. That's just ONE code.

wonder if the light will go off by itself after a while.
If you manage to teach your car to repair itself, I want in on that.

Thanks for the tip. Autozone will actually do a diagnostic for free? And is that done through one of their affiliated repair shops? Thanks again!

Default O2 sensor

Probably a good guess like that other guy mentioned that it's your O2 sensor. The check engine light came on for me on my 2001 at 55K and it was the sensor. I think I remember the total $$ being around $375.

Thanks - went to Autozone for the free diagnostic. It is the O2 sensor, looks like I will be bringing it to the dealer for it to be looked at. Hopefully it is a bad connection and the sensor does not need to be replaced at $400.

Got the post-cat O2 sensor fixed by the dealer for $350. This is the first and hopefully last time I have an unplanned trip there. Thanks all for the tips!!!!
