I saw a discussion here where a guy (not much mod in the engine) raced an M3 and he got smoked after
the M3 gave him a 3 car length lead  However, a guy with an Area51 SC (also in one of the discussions here) went head-to-head and the M3 could not loose him

You cant compare an IS to an M3. Besides, unless its an extremely heavily modded IS, there is no chance the IS of even keeping 3 car lengths behind the M3. Not batting down the IS but be realistic, the m3 is basically a supercar.

You are absolutely right that an M3 is a (very) fast car. For an IS to beat or even keep up with it, the IS has to have an SC or Turbo mod. A little side bar, I found this on the nhtsa web site

ODI ID: 748053
Make: BMW
Model: M3
Year: 2001
Date of Failure:
Incident: No
Fire: No
Number of Injuries:
Component: POWER TRAINRIVESHAFT
Summary: MY CAR EXHIBITS A LOUD CLUNKING IN THE REAR OF THE CAR WHEN SHIFTING, GOING ON/OFF GAS AND FROM
RELEASING THE CLUTCH AT SLOW SPEEDS. THE SEVERITY IS INCREASING

That's why I stay away from European cars in general

Don't the new M3's trap somewhere around 106? That is some pretty serious speed.

Default Ive had both

I can give you a definate answer. The IS stands no chance in hell. How do I know this? I sold my 99 Dakar M3 for my 2001 IS300. The m3 is awesome, and will beat the IS in any performance category, acceleration, cornering...hands down, sorry. But I love my IS (enough to trade my m3). The m3 loses in terms of commuting (stop go traffic sucks in the m3) and the IS has better visual appeal and (probably) reliability. Im glad I have my IS, but anyone tells you they beat an m3 (I dont care what year) is lying (or the driver of the m3 either sucks or wasnt trying).

You guys are thinking in terms of straight-ahead stoplight to stoplight stuff, where the M3 is going to kick the IS300 100% of the time. But if you take on an M3 in a venue where driver's skill matters (like on a closed roadracing course), then if you're good enough, you might find yourself faster than many drivers of M3s. Heck, I've lapped Testarossas...

Doesn't the GS300 have the same engine as the IS300 (except for 10 more horses)? Plus its' heavier (I think). So I think the GS400 would be the one fair with an M3.

The M3 would woop up on any STOCK Lexus. Whether it be on a straight line or in the corners. It can get interesting when you Mod your Lex though.
