i always thought it was

es = entry level sedan
is = international sedan
gs = grand touring sedan
ls = luxury sedan
rx = recreational 4wd
gx = grand 4wd
lx = luxury 4wd
sc = sports coupe/convertible

LS: Luxury Sedan
ES: Executive Sedan
IS: ??? Sedan
GS: Giugiaro Sedan

International doesn't sound quite right for the Luxe Sports market...
