Default Is it safe to drive with the Check Hybrid System Warning light?

So I got the dreaded Check Hybrid System in my 2007 GS450h with 91K miles. The dealer quoted me $8K for the replacement and I just file a case with Lexus corporate to see if they can help out.

The service advisor said that I could technically keep driving with the check engine, but the hybrid system will not perform at 100% efficiency. Has anybody heard the same thing?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the traction battery might overheat if one of the cells is failing.

This just happened to me yesterday. I have 94,000 and was going to the dealer to get my 90K service done when the light went on. I pulled over, restarted the car and drove to the dealer about 20 miles away. Car ran fine, just no hybrid.

Dealer called me today saying that the battery needed replacement and they already spoke to Lexus who was willing to cover all but $2000. What did you do to file a claim with Lexus? I'd like to plead my case with them to see if they can cover more.

A third party hybrid shop can replace individual battery cells for a couple hundred dollars or so. It is unlikely that the entire battery pack is shot.

Wow...that sounds really good. The dealer quoted me $8700 (Bay area, CA), and if Lexus corporate offered me that deal I would take it in a heartbeat (still waiting for the call back). I called around and no shop will just replace single cells as they say that fix does not last and you would need to condition the whole pack anyways, which takes $$$. Greentecauto.com seems to be the more reputable shop for aftermarket replacement and they charge around $3300 installed with an 18 month warranty.
