The hilly CA terrain definitely has an effect on MPG. The RX is a heavy wagon.
When I'm visiting relatives, the 60 mile route is mostly downhill and my MPG (even with 20" wheels) is about 26-28 MPG. On the way home, it is, of course, mostly uphill and the mpg drops by 3-4 MPG.
Much to my wife's dismay, I turn the bad LA traffic into something positive by saying "Yay! High MPG time!"
Octane has no affect on my mileage. I use 87 and get the same MPG as when I use 92. The CA gas is a special emissions blend only sold in CA. The car has less power when I use it. It also lowers the MPG.
