Yeah, I hear ya.
It was a gamble. My wife thought the same thing.
If it was any different make I probably would not have done that.
Now that I am home she loves the car. I am back to work and all is good in our world.
By the way. I know this sounds nuts because the car was made to be basically silent, I would like to get a nice sound from exhaust. Not obnoxious, just a growl when you get on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Default $6,000 2008 Lexus LS600HL

I have a 2011 Prius and a 2006 Lexus RX400H SUV AWD and both run great and have been trouble free, the Lexus has 190,000 miles and I bought it used very reasonably, bought the Prius new and has been extremely reliable. I always wanted the Lexus LS600HL though. I like big cars and the combination of an 8 cylinder engine and hybrid is appealing even though I've heard there isn't much difference in gas mileage compared to the normal Lexus LS460. I have a friend who worked at a Lexus dealer for 24 years who told me I should stay away from the LS600HL, but I'm like a moth to a flame, they're hard to resist when one comes in the range of $6,000! I saw one advertised and spoke to the owner who was very forthcoming but didn't know a lot about the car, his mechanic doesn't give him any receipts(red flag?) and he replaced the central information screen with an aftermarket one and the back up cam doesn't work, although he said he can give me the original which he replaced because it wouldn't go on. He said he's had some shock work that wasn't to expensive and only drove it 10,000 miles, he's the 5th owner, 135,000 miles, no accidents on AutoCheck, no check engine light on, no other warnings other than the TPMS, black and it has the rare executive package with the passenger side rear ottoman seat. I am so tempted but also worried that I'll buy a money pit because on these threads I read about everything that potentially can go bad, control arms, abs, transmission, exhaust, etc. Uncharacteristic for a Lexus. Any thoughts? Better to just stick with the Lexus RX450H, which has a much better record of reliability, luxury and AWD? Are these just becoming old cars now? Naturally, I couldn't afford one when they were over $100,000! It sounds like you could buy one of these and have to potentially repair them to the tune of $20,000 if everything on these threads goes wrong! True? Other than a Lexus dealer, is there anyone on the East Coast who specializes in repairing these cars and is more adffordable?

Normal mileage in the city for a swb 460 is around 15 mpg if you're careful, people that claim more are just bad at math.

Thanks for the reply, the car that I was interested in turned out to have 267,000 miles in 2019 after I got the service records from the vin at a Lexus dealer and was advertised with 135,000! Passing on it! What are people selling nice ones with all the service up to date?

I'm in Canada so it's a different market but the price for 460's on this site varies, 600's loaded would be a bit higher I'm sure.

Here's one up north near me for an idea.

Any major repairs listed in those service records?

Default about to give up on my quest for a LS600HL

After reading about all the potential issues with these cars, it would seem you'd be lucky to not experience a big bill at some point of your ownership with a LS600HL, especially when they reach high miles. Not sure if this applies to the 2013-2015 cars and if they were improved over the 2008-2012. As the LS500 prices start to come down, they might be a better option. I just bought a 2013 RX450H with 112,000 miles and my feeling, other than it's a SUV rather than a sedan, it's a better buy, less of a used car gamble, far less issues reported, still with AWD, hybrid and 6 cylinder instead of an 8. A friend of mine who worked for a Lexus dealer for 24 years told me to avoid the LS600HL, with the potential for huge bills from control arms, ABS actuator, exhaust, air suspension, hybrid battery! I know some of the 2008's I've seen can be had for $10-15000, but you could wind up spending up to $30,000 in repairs! This is counter intuitive for a Lexus!

not sure, but I was pissed off at the seller trying to pass it off as a lower mileage car-evidently in places like NY, Lexuses with turned back mileage is not uncommon on sites like Facebook, etc, so I've heard.

I can't remember which CL thread I got the following webpage from:

Toyota Camry Hybrid Battery: Electrician spent $10 not $4,000 to fix
https://www.greencarreports.com/news...ot-4000-to-fix

but has anyone here tried this procedure on their 600?

Default reliability of the Lexus LS600HL

still looking at the 2008 Lexus LS600Hl as they seem to be more abundant than the other years-according to "ai", the 2010 and newer are more reliable but harder to find. I would agree that the only way it would make sense to buy one is if you can get an aftermarket warranty for all the potential issues: air suspension, control arms, valley plate gasket, abs actuator, hybrid battery, interior component deterioration, valve cover gaskets-if you could do the labor yourself, have the time to do it, I guess that's an alternative. At this point, now approaching 2026, a two year old AWD SUV, hybrid with a remaining new car warranty is probably a safer bet

2008 LS600 are the MOST common and numerous out there, as is easily seen when you search for used LS600's. I believe in another thread on here, someone posted that dealers got allocations of 2008 LS600's. But after 2008, no more allocations of LS600's for dealers, they could only special order them. And I'm sure sure most dealers didn't want several $100K+ cars sitting on their lot.
