Default HS never gets average of 34.5 mpg

their rating is rated at 34 street and 35 highway.

so this is an average of 34.5 with the lowest ever being 34.

however our odometer never hits 34 as an average, it's always at 29 to 30 at highest.

this is very mis-leading, is lexus obligated to take the car back due to false advertisement or pay the difference in actual gas mpg vs advertised mpg.

I'm still on my first tank of gas and I'm getting 36 mpg (in mixed highway and city driving), so I'm very pleased with the mileage.

Lexus is not obligated to do anything about your gas mileage as long as the car is functioning properly. Those figures are "estimated" by the EPA and it explicitly says that your results can vary based on a wide variety of factors.

Right - other threads about this show people getting anywhere from the 20's to upper 40's mpg - just depends how you drive, environmental factors, etc. But I think most people are seeing mid-30's. I'm at about 1500 miles, and am seeing 36.7 average according to the computer. Based on actual gas and odometer calcs, it's around 35. But a brief heat wave we had a few weeks ago dropped my mpg, so my guess is it will drop over the summer months. My HS at least seems to be happiest when the temp is around 70.

As has been stated since car manufactures started putting mileage figures on the sticker..."your mileage may vary"

its all about driving habits also. there are so many factors that come into play when doing mpg.

Look at your window sticker because it provides a range. For example:

The MPG ratings are EPA Estimates. ESTIMATES is the keyword here. There's no misleading if you understand what you're reading, including the window sticker.

You may want to read this: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/info.shtml

The best mileage I have gotten on an HS250h is 40.1MPG on consistent highway driving. On mixed/city, i've averaged 34 to 35 easily without trying. If i'm on the pedal and in PWR mode, the worst i've experienced is 32.2.

I easily get 35mpg average in non ECO mode at that. Best i've gotten was 44 mpg avg and lowest was 31. That being said, I really havent noticed a difference in MPG when using ECO mode and normal mode (ECO mode off). Performance is wayyyy better in normal mode and gas mileage the same? Anyone notice this?

You might need to drive the car differently to take advantage of full-ECO mode. I tried it one trip, and it was very annoying, and my mileage actually dropped a bit! Now, my commute profile is not real hybrid-friendly: a lot of highway driving ~75mph coupled with country roads doing ~50. So I just use Normal, and approaching 2k miles, get ~36.5 indicated, 35 actual.

Yeah my commute is alot like yours. Long stretches of Texas highway with around 70MPH speed limits and then the occasional little town with the speed limit dropping to 40 as you pass through.

You probably alrdy know but biggest factor is driving habit... Lexus does not have to do anything to prove the mpg if you step on the gas too much..

I've had my hs for about 3 months and have never got less than 32 mpg. I usually end up around 34.5-36, however I don't drive it like I stole it, I have pretty conservative driving habits. I also drove from DFW-Austin and back and ended up at 41.1 mpg on one trip. I'm pretty happy with the hs.

Hi Mike,

If you live in a "hilly" area and have short commutes ... the mileage you are seeing may actually be pretty good. The mpg numbers are all relative to the conditions and geography you are driving in. I get pretty good mpg ... but my commute plays into the strengths of the HS and I also use some hypermiling techniques.

The HS has it's own personality when driving for fuel efficiency. It's also not entirely obvious in the methods to do it. I have had my HS for almost 7 months ... and I finally feel like "I'm getting it".
