When you compare it to regular cars it might not make much sense, but when you compare it to other hybrids the market starts to emerge. Sure people want to save gas but a lot of them don't want to get rid of their comfortable leather or other creature comforts that are generally better in a luxury brand than in the mainstream ones.
I understand that the Prius has a leather option, but I've been in the Prius IV and Toyota leather is not nearly as good as Lexus leather. I would consider this car if
1) I want a hybrid
2) I don't need a large car (RX450h or LS600h)
3) I want a sedan.
4) I want a lot of technology

Road Trip: Lexus HS 250h
This is not really a review as much as an infomercial. It's pretty dumb (I swear the "host" is drunk. At least he's not driving...), but thought I'd post it for those who are interested.

Lexus' hybrid compact strikes out
Lexus' ballyhooed HS 250h hybrid fails on almost all fronts, offering worse fuel economy and interior space than other hybrids costing thousands of dollars less
Weighed against an excellent hybrid midsize sedan like the Ford Fusion, the HS 250h's smaller interior, higher price and lower fuel economy make Lexus' new hybrid one of the year's more disappointing new cars

I don't remember seeing such a negative Lexus review.....not a very well written review

1. the source is the detroit free press which is completely slanted
against imports. Time after time they bash imports and the biggest foreign brand Toyota
2. I guess the great demand for the HS means nothing to them
3. Mark Phelan is the author, he hates imports. He also recently bashed the new Kia Forte, which has gotten great reviews elsewhere
4. You do not like the HS, not surprising you posted this link. Did you read the article?
Look at this joke for an automotive writer
The HS competes with less-expensive hybrid models like the Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, Mercury Milan, Nissan Altima and Toyota Prius.
Is he an idiot? The HS starts at nearly $35,000. Only the Milan is competition here. The HS honestly doesn't have much if any direct competiton. It competes with the A4, TSX and other entry level luxury vehicles.

It's all about the Lexus experience...something most people don't understand. They only see a small picture, most of us see the value in the whole package. Since when did they get a free complimentary loaner car when brinigng in their Fusion Hybrid or dare I say Toyota Prius in for service? Who has a better warranty? Lexus offers 4 yrs/50k miles bumper to bumper, 6 years/70k for powertrain and 8 years/100k miles on the hybrid compoments. Where's Ford at? Enough said.

Agree with the above (comparing a Lexus to a Ford is a ridiculous comparison -- Apples and Oranges). I maintain, however, that Lexus missed a great opportunity to make their only dedicated hybrid vehicle visually stunning and unique. Instead, they chose a design that in inoffensive rather than incomparable.

Here's Canadian Driver's full review (as opposed to the "first drive" posted above:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/2009/1...xus-hs250h.htm
It's really not a review as much as it is a cut-and-paste job of the features and specifications.

Lexus got everything right with this car except one thing - looks dept.
Should have just used the IS250/350 platform then make a hybrid model of it.
It's the toyota Avensis (which is ugly enough) with parts borrowed from the Prius.
We call civic onwers riceboys when they dress up their cars to look like the EL, now Lexus has done all the work for you and you pay double the price of a Prius.
Don't get me wrong - this car has many positives, but the packaging (exterior) doesn't appeal to me.
This reminds me of the LS250 in 1990 when Toyota took the Cressida and just rebaged it. I know the HS250h isn't a direct rebadging but it just looks hedious.....
I think Lexus has missed the market (for me anyway). They were trying to go after luxury car buyers who wants to be eco friendly. But that doesn't mean all of a sudden looks don't matter - it still does. Lexus should have just dumped a hybrid powerplant into the IS250, instead of this sorry looking car
But i guess people pay $100 for a t-shirt that costs $10 when it has a designer label on it so go figure...
