I’m here to see if any of the knowledgeable experts on the forum could help me get to the bottom of something. Has anyone else experienced a slight shake in the steering wheel when driving over 80mph? It’s not a major issue, and nothing to be overly concerned about, but it is a bit worrying.
When I purchased the car two years ago, I recall hearing a YouTuber mention that this shake is somewhat common when crossing the 80mph threshold. I’m curious if anyone else has had a similar experience or if this is something I should look into further.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
It could be many things on an aging vehicle. What year and how many miles are on it? Always provide that information when asking for diagnosis help. My HS at 106,000 is fine at 85 with new front tires and the only suspension work was replacing the rear shocks at 80,000..
First and simplist is your tires may be old, worn and out of balance.
Next is worn suspension components such a as ball joints, wheel bearings, axles, struts, strut mounts etc. Bushings could be worn or torn etc.
It is best to have the vehicle inspected by a competent, well regarded independent repair shop and maybe put on an alignment rack for a check.
You can use this database to begin your search for a shop if you do not already have a trusted place. Once you find a few candidates, double check them on Google & Yelp as some reviews are old and out of date.

Thanks for your response, Clutchless. However, I really don’t think the tires are the issue. After purchasing the car, I put on a brand new set of Michelin tires—specifically the ones recommended for the car—and I was experiencing the shakes even then. But I do agree with you that having a good mechanic inspect the entire suspension is a solid idea. I haven’t had a thorough inspection since I took it to a Lexus dealership, though I’ve had a lot of people tell me not to trust them. Anyway, I was mainly wondering if others were experiencing the same issue, but I’ll definitely take it to my mechanic for a full check-up. Thanks again for your advice and time!
How many miles have you put on the tires since purchase? It may be time to balance them again. That would be the cheapest solution as they do get out of balance a bit after thousands of miles.
You got me there, Clutchless! I'd have to sit down and figure out how many miles I've driven since the day I purchased the car. I guess you're right about needing to balance them again—I thought it was a one-time thing. But like they say, you learn something new every day. I was just about to purchase a new set of rims with tires from Tire Rack, so I might just wait until then.
