OBD Fusion/Link can scan most vehicle ECUs and is almost like portable Techstream. / perform your own scan of vehicle for issues. Check to see when codes were last reset as well. Seller could be hiding issues if codes were recently reset. While OBD readiness can be reset with a battery swap you can see how long ago that event took place.



Check to make sure the coolant recovery tank has pink coolant in it. If empty this could indicate leak.

Make sure vehicle will go into 4L. Place vehicle in neutral before doing this.

Make sure Center Differential Lock (CDL) will engage and disengage. You usually need to move some to engage/disengage.

If you are looking at a '14+ and believe ATF fluid has not been changed you can check the ATF Thermal Degradation with OBD Link or Techstream

 

On my 5 year old gen2 (2015):
- timing cover leak - manifests with some minor oil leak below the heads of the V8, at the side of the serpentine belt pulley, easier to spot on the driver side of engine, bad Toyota sealer during assembly
- water pump - 140USD in parts - watch out for an empty coolant reservoir, happens to most engines around 100k
- serpentine belt tensioner - 40USD in parts, happens to most engines around 100k
- dead battery - 5 years time, pretty normal

Other:
- engine valley coolant leak - not happened to me, but people mention about 1000-2000 USD in labor, happens because of a faulty Toyota sealer used

if you live in the salt belt, apart from looking for frame rust, check under the doors for rust also.

better off saving that money, just dont skip getting the gx looked by an independent mechanic and having a look under it and at the air bags for dry rot if youre getting one with that option
